Wreck It Ronnie Stuns 1-33 Favourite in British Racing Record Upset

Wreck It Ronnie produced a historic upset at Goodwood on Tuesday, defeating the heavily backed Najidi Storm in the Cleansing Service Group Novice Stakes. Najidi Storm started at odds of 1-33 but could finish only second, becoming the shortest-priced losing favourite recorded in British racing history.

The Guardian reported that Wreck It Ronnie, sent off at 10-1, made virtually all the running under jockey Kieren Fox. Lewis Edmunds tried to close the gap aboard Najidi Storm, but the Harry Charlton-trained favourite never managed to pass the leader. Dream Of Albion, the only other horse in the field, finished a distant third in the 10-furlong race.

The result was remarkable because the market had treated Najidi Storm's victory as close to a formality. He had won on his racecourse debut in August and carries an elite pedigree: he is by the unbeaten champion Frankel and is a half-brother to a St Leger winner. Wreck It Ronnie entered after two previous starts in which he had been beaten by a combined 22 and a half lengths.

Why it matters

The 1-33 starting price moves Najidi Storm past Doom and Royal Forest in an unwanted section of the record book. Those two horses had jointly held the previous British record after defeats at 1-25, in 2023 and 1948 respectively. The Goodwood outcome therefore displaced a benchmark that had stood alone or jointly for decades.

Odds of 1-33 imply overwhelming market confidence, but they do not remove the uncertainty built into a live contest. A small field can also create unusual tactical circumstances. With only three runners, Wreck It Ronnie was able to dictate the pace rather than settle into a larger pack, and Fox converted that opportunity into a front-running victory.

Race impact

For Wreck It Ronnie, the win transforms the early shape of his career. He arrived without a victory and with form that offered little obvious evidence he could beat a well-bred, odds-on rival. The Goodwood performance gives his connections a result of lasting historical significance as well as a first win.

For Najidi Storm, the defeat does not erase the promise of his debut success or his pedigree, but it changes expectations ahead of his next start. Connections will now assess whether the result reflected race tactics, development, conditions or simply an opponent improving sharply. The narrow competitive context matters: the favourite still finished far ahead of Dream Of Albion, yet he could not catch the horse that controlled the race.

The upset also produced an unusual betting outcome. Despite the favourite's defeat, bookmakers quoted by The Guardian said the race was not necessarily profitable for them. Some bettors avoided the extremely short price and instead backed Wreck It Ronnie, making the winner a significant liability in certain books.

What to watch

The next entries for both leading horses will show how much predictive value the shock result carries. Wreck It Ronnie must prove that his Goodwood improvement can be repeated in another field and under different tactical conditions. Najidi Storm, meanwhile, will have an immediate chance to show whether this was an isolated setback.
