Worrall leads Surrey attack as Yorkshire stumble to 133-7

Dan Worrall led a decisive Surrey seam-bowling display as Yorkshire closed on 133 for seven on a rain-shortened opening day of their County Championship Division One match at the Kia Oval. Worrall returned three for 24 from 17 overs, while Tom Lawes took two for 22 and Matt Fisher two for 42.

BBC Sport reported that morning rain delayed the start until 13:10 BST, but Surrey quickly made use of a well-grassed pitch after winning the toss. Yorkshire lost their first three wickets for one run in only 2.3 overs, giving Surrey a bowling bonus point after just 15 deliveries.

Fisher struck first when Adam Lyth was given leg-before for one after shouldering arms. Sam Whiteman was also lbw to a fuller Fisher delivery two balls later. Worrall then removed Will Luxton for a four-ball duck, inducing an edge that wicketkeeper Ben Foakes caught with a diving effort to his right.

James Wharton and Matt Revis rebuilt the innings with a 91-run fourth-wicket partnership spanning 37 overs. Wharton made 45 and Revis 40 as Yorkshire recovered to 86 for three by tea, but Lawes ended the stand in the 40th over when Revis flicked a catch to midwicket.

Worrall dismissed Jonny Bairstow for three in the following over, finding an outside edge that Ollie Pope held at second slip. Lawes then ended Wharton’s three-hour innings with another edge to Pope. George Hill later thin-edged Worrall through to Foakes, taking the score from 101 for six to 113 for seven.

Dom Bess provided Yorkshire with late resistance, reaching 21 not out from 49 balls before bad light stopped play. The interruption left 12.1 overs of the rescheduled 72-over day unbowled. Surrey’s championship debutant Auqib Nabi went wicketless but conceded only 25 runs in 11 overs, while the home side collected two points and Yorkshire none from the day.
