The 2026 World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre has delivered explosive first-round action, with defending champion Luca Brecel facing a stunning early elimination threat from qualifier Elliot Slessor.

Watch the highlights:

Brecel, who made history last year by becoming the first player from continental Europe to lift the famous trophy, finds himself trailing 7-2 after the opening session of his first-round match against Slessor. The Belgian was visibly frustrated as his break-building abandoned him, with Slessor punishes every mistake with ruthless efficiency.

The match got off to a remarkable start when Slessor compiled a 136 total in the opening frame, immediately signaling his intent. He followed that with further breaks of 84, 71, and 58 as Brecel struggled to find any rhythm on the famous Crucible tables.

"I came here with no expectations after last year's win, but that freedom seems to be helping me," Slessor said during the mid-session interval. "Luca's the champion for a reason, but the tables are playing differently this year, and I'm adapting better."

In other first-round action, Judd Trump continued his quest for a second world title with a dominant 8-1 session against China's Zhou Yuxiang, compiling breaks of 127, 98, and 94. The Australian Open champion looks in imperious form as he aims to add the sport's greatest prize to his collection.

Ronnie O'Sullivan also made a strong start, though the seven-time champion required a final-frame fightback to edge past debutant Si Jiahui 5-4 in their opening session. O'Sullivan, seeking to match Stephen Hendry's record of eight world titles, showed glimpses of his best but admitted afterward that he needs to improve significantly.

"Not my best performance, but I'll take the win," O'Sullivan said. "The Crucible has a way of focusing the mind. Tomorrow I'll be better."

The tournament continues with second-round action beginning tomorrow, as 16 players remain in contention for the prestigious title and the £500,000 winner's prize.
