World Aquatics Lifts Ban: Russian and Belarusian Swimmers Return Under Own Flags
World Aquatics has reversed its policy, allowing senior swimmers from Russia and Belarus to compete under their national flags following years of exclusion over geopolitical conflict.

In a significant shift that marks a new chapter for international aquatic sport, World Aquatics has announced the removal of restrictions that previously barred Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing under their own flags at senior-level competitions.

The governing body decision, announced following deliberation by the World Aquatics Bureau in conjunction with the Aquatics Integrity Unit and the World Aquatics Athletes Committee, means swimmers representing these two nations can now participate in World Aquatics events with their national symbols, anthems, and uniforms restored.

The reinstatement comes with strict conditions designed to address concerns around fairness and anti-doping compliance. Competing athletes must first clear at least four consecutive anti-doping controls administered in partnership with the International Testing Agency. Additionally, all applicants are required to undergo comprehensive background screening through the Aquatics Integrity Unit before being cleared to compete.

This move aligns World Aquatics with the International Paralympic Committee, which had already admitted Russian and Belarussian athletes under their respective flags at the recent Milan-Cortina Games. The decision also follows suggestions from FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who indicated earlier this year that football's world governing body was examining possibilities for restoring Russia's participation in international competitions, a prospect met with fierce criticism from Ukraine sports minister Matvii Bidnyi, who described such a move as irresponsible and infantile.

The reversal concludes a period of exclusion that had separated many elite swimmers from competition on the world stage, opening pathways for athletes whose careers had been disrupted by the geopolitical situation.
