Woodyard turnovers help Missouri beat Kansas 38-21 in Border War

No. 23 Missouri defeated Kansas 38-21 in Lawrence on September 11, scoring 24 second-half points after the Border War rivals reached halftime level. Kansas Athletics confirmed that the result at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium moved the Tigers to 2-0 and left the Jayhawks at 1-1 after their first defeat of the season.

Robert Woodyard Jr. was central to the decisive swing. According to the Lawrence Journal-World, Kansas quarterback Isaiah Marshall lost possession on each of his team's first two offensive plays after halftime, first with a fumble and then an interception involving the Missouri linebacker. The Tigers converted those opportunities into touchdowns to establish a 28-14 lead.

Austin Simmons found Donovan Olugbode for an eight-yard touchdown after the first turnover, and Xai'Shaun Edwards followed with a 10-yard scoring run. The touchdowns came just 48 seconds apart on the game clock. Simmons finished with 292 passing yards and three touchdown passes, while Jamal Roberts rushed for 125 yards and a score, the Journal-World reported.

Kansas had initially gained an advantage through its special teams. Corey Gordon blocked a Missouri field-goal attempt in the scoreless first quarter. Leroy Harris III blocked another in the second, allowing Austin Alexander to return the ball 88 yards for the opening touchdown. Marshall later connected with Nik McMillan for a 20-yard score, but Missouri answered both Kansas touchdowns before the interval.

The Jayhawks responded to the third-quarter deficit with an 11-play, 83-yard drive, ending in Marshall's touchdown pass to Nahzae Cox to make it 28-21, according to Kansas Athletics. Missouri then scored the game's final 10 points. Blake Craig kicked a field goal before Simmons connected with Brett Norfleet for the last touchdown, following another Kansas turnover described in the Journal-World's report.

Marshall ended with 168 passing yards and two touchdowns, plus 23 rushing yards. McMillan led Kansas receivers with 52 yards from two catches. Kansas now turns to the September 19 Union Jack Classic against Arizona State at Wembley Stadium in London, with kickoff scheduled for 11 a.m. Central, Kansas Athletics said.
