Wolff Warns Norris and Hamilton Are Closing on Mercedes in F1 Title Race

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has identified Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton as serious Formula One championship contenders after the Dutch Grand Prix exposed how sharply the competitive order has tightened. The Guardian reported that Wolff acknowledged the threat following Norris's victory at Zandvoort, where Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell finished second and third.

Norris's success was his second consecutive win of the season and lifted him to 159 points. Antonelli continues to lead the standings, holding a 59-point advantage over Hamilton and Russell, who are level on 183, while Norris sits 83 points behind. Eleven races remain, leaving substantial ground available for Mercedes' rivals to recover.

The result also underlined McLaren's recent progress. Norris won after the team introduced several upgrades for the Dutch event, while Ferrari has also moved closer to Mercedes during the season. Hamilton, who finished fourth at Zandvoort, and teammate Charles Leclerc have each won once this year. Mercedes, by comparison, won eight of the opening 12 rounds, including the first six.

According to The Guardian, Wolff said Mercedes is fully aware of the challenge posed by both Norris and Ferrari. He expects the championship contest to become more difficult as the season develops and said the team must maximise every session and race weekend. Mercedes has so far brought one major development package, introduced at the Canadian Grand Prix.

The contrasting upgrade schedules reflect how the teams have chosen to use their resources under Formula One's budget cap. McLaren and Ferrari have deployed extensive developments earlier in the campaign, while Mercedes has spread its planned spending across the season. Wolff said that approach is based on calculations about when upgrades can deliver the largest championship benefit.

Mercedes is not expected to introduce another major upgrade until the October race in Malaysia, which is branded as the Bahrain Grand Prix, according to the report. Ferrari is understood to be preparing an engine upgrade for the next round at Monza. Wolff also confirmed that championship leader Antonelli will take a new engine at his home race, triggering grid penalties and adding another complication to Mercedes' title defence.
