Wisconsin Badgers Land Northeastern Transfer Dylan Compton After National Championship Loss
The Wisconsin Badgers are wasting no time reloading after their championship heartbreak.
Just days after dropping a heartbreaker to Denver in the national title game, Wisconsin has landed a commitment from Northeastern transfer defenseman Dylan Compton, bolstering a blue line that will need to replace standout Ben Dexheimer.
Compton appeared in 36 games as a freshman at Northeastern during the 2025-26 season, finishing with four goals and six assists. The Lakeville, Minnesota native arrived at Northeastern after a breakout campaign in the United States Hockey League with the Waterloo Black Hawks in 2024-25, where he logged 62 regular-season games and piled up 45 points on five goals and 40 assists.
His production didn't stop when the calendar turned to the playoffs. In 13 USHL postseason games that same year, Compton recorded two goals and 11 assists, demonstrating the kind of two-way play that Wisconsin's coaching staff clearly found attractive.
For a Badgers program still processing the sting of a championship-game loss, Compton represents an immediate infusion of experience and skill on the back end. He won't be asked to replace Dexheimer's exact skill set, but he gives head coach Bob Loughridge a player who can log meaningful minutes and contribute offensively from the defensive position.
The transfer portal has become a primary weapon for college hockey programs looking to reload quickly, and Wisconsin is a program that has shown a willingness to use it aggressively. After coming up just short against Denver, the Badgers' swift move for Compton signals an organizational hunger to get back to the mountaintop next season.
Compton is expected to be available immediately for the 2026-27 season, giving Wisconsin a defenseman with USHL stardom in his recent past and one year of NCAA experience under his belt.
