Windber Offense Explodes for 16 Runs in Dominant Win Over Portage
It was a long evening for Portage at the plate, and a cathartic one for Windber.
The Ramblers erupted for 16 runs on 16 hits Monday, blowing past the Mustangs 16-5 in nonconference softball in Portage. The offensive onslaught was led by Cameron Mash, who delivered a 4-for-4 performance with three runs scored and two RBIs. But the highlight of the night belonged to Rylee Baer, whose grand slam capped a multi-run rally and drove in five runs total.
Mash was far from alone in the hit column. Emma Kelly and Sadie Pecze each logged three hits, with Kelly adding a home run and Pecze a pair of doubles. Brooke Stager also contributed to the balanced Windber attack.
For Portage, Reese Pinizzotto managed two doubles and Mikaila McCoy doubled, but the Mustangs never recovered after falling into an early hole.
In other action across the region, Westmont Hilltop kept its unbeaten record intact courtesy of a walk-off home run by Bella Kist in the bottom of the seventh, lifting the Hilltoppers past Richland 5-4. Abby Rozich collected three hits including a double, while Sara Gibbons also went deep for Westmont, now 7-0 on the season.
Somerset edged Bishop McCort Catholic 3-2 in a pitchers duel. Brooklyn Thomas threw a complete game, allowing four hits while striking out six. Lariah Myers struck out 15 for Bishop McCort and homered, but could not prevent the Crimson Crushers from falling short.
United dispatched Ferndale 12-1 in five innings behind Ella Worthington's three-hit, three-RBI night that included a home run. Kenedi Fiochetta also had three hits, all doubles, as the Lions built an early lead they would never relinquish.
Forest Hills ran-rule'd Greater Johnstown 10-0 in five innings. Rhory Whetstone struck out six in a three-hit shutout, while Trista Cruley drove in two runs with a pair of doubles.
Northern Cambria made it a long day for Blacklick Valley, sweeping a doubleheader by combined scores of 34-2. In the opener, Ava Messina clubbed two home runs including a three-run shot in the first and a three-run bomb in the second, driving in six runs total. Alyssa Yahner struck out eight and walked one in the circle.
North Star breezed past Williamsburg 11-1 in six innings. Morgan Snyder went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, three runs and five RBIs. Alisha Yoder added three hits and four runs scored.
