Will Jacks takes five wickets as England beat Sri Lanka by 89 runs

Will Jacks delivered with bat and ball as England defeated Sri Lanka by 89 runs in the opening one-day international at Chester-le-Street on September 22. According to BBC Sport's match report, his unbeaten 46 helped England reach 265 before he claimed a career-best 5-22 to dismiss the visitors for 176 in 37 overs.

Harry Brook led England's scoring with 67 from 69 balls, while Joe Root contributed 44 on a pitch offering limited pace and bounce. England were bowled out in 48.1 overs and did not hit a six. BBC Sport reported that it was the first time since 2019 that England had completed an innings batting first without clearing the boundary.

Sri Lanka's debutant leg-spinner Sachindu Colombage took 3-44, dismissing Root, Jos Buttler and Jamie Overton. Buttler made 31 before being trapped lbw, while Overton was bowled for eight. Brook's dismissal, caught at deep cover, was part of a spell in which England lost four wickets for 29 runs, leaving Jacks to work with the lower order.

England were 211-7 in the 39th over before Jacks helped extend the innings. He scored 18 runs from the 47th over, but Asitha Fernando then bowled Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue to end England's batting effort. Fernando had also removed opener Tom Banton for 10 earlier in the innings. Jacks finished unbeaten as the hosts left 11 deliveries unused.

Jacks subsequently dismissed Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka as Sri Lanka struggled to build their chase. Dunith Wellalage provided resistance with 45 from 36 balls, including two sixes, before offering a catch to mid-on off Jacks. The off-spinner also removed Fernando and Dilshan Madushanka. BBC Sport described his return as the best bowling figures by an England spinner in an ODI since Vic Marks in 1984.

Gus Atkinson supported Jacks with 1-25 from seven overs, and Overton took 2-21 from five. The result gave England a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and their 10th consecutive white-ball victory over Sri Lanka this year. They can secure the series at Headingley on Thursday, with the final match scheduled for Sunday at The Oval.
