Will Jacks contributed with bat and ball as England defeated Sri Lanka by 89 runs in the first one-day international at Chester-le-Street. According to BBC Sport's match report, Jacks made an unbeaten 46 before taking career-best figures of 5-22, helping the hosts defend 265 and establish a winning start to the three-match series.

England's innings was built around Harry Brook's 67 from 69 balls and Joe Root's 44 on a slow, low surface. Jos Buttler added 31, but the home side were bowled out in 48.1 overs. BBC Sport reported that it was the first time since 2019 that England had completed an innings batting first without hitting a six.

Sri Lanka's debutant leg-spinner Sachindu Colombage took 3-44 and played a central part in disrupting England's middle order. He bowled Root, trapped Buttler lbw and dismissed Overton for eight with a googly. Brook was caught at deep cover after driving, and England lost four wickets for 29 runs during a spell that left their lower order with work to do.

Jacks helped extend the innings after England reached 211-7 in the 39th over. He scored 18 runs from the 47th over, giving the hosts a late contribution before Asitha Fernando ended the innings. Fernando, who had earlier bowled opener Tom Banton for 10, used reverse swing to bowl Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue, leaving Jacks unbeaten rather than allowing him to attack through the remaining overs.

Sri Lanka were then dismissed for 176 in 37 overs, with Dunith Wellalage making 45 from 36 balls. Jacks removed Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka before taking wickets among the lower order to complete his five-wicket haul. England's bowlers kept the scoring in check and took wickets regularly, turning a total of 265 into a comfortable margin of victory.

The result extended England's winning run against Sri Lanka across white-ball formats to 10 matches this year, BBC Sport reported. England can secure a third successive ODI series victory when the teams meet at Headingley on Thursday. The final match is scheduled for Sunday at The Oval, leaving Sri Lanka needing to win the second game to keep the series alive.
