Wigan Rout Leeds 40-8 to Take Control of League Leaders' Shield Race

Wigan Warriors moved to the top of Super League with a 40-8 victory over Leeds Rhinos at Headingley on Saturday, taking control of the League Leaders' Shield race with one regular-season match remaining. BBC Sport reported that the win was Wigan’s 14th in succession in the competition and lifted the Warriors two points clear of Leeds.

Adam Keighran led Wigan’s scoring with three tries and six successful goals. He crossed twice in the opening stages as the visitors established an early advantage at the sold-out ground. Leeds answered through Ash Handley, with Jake Connor converting, but Wigan carried a 16-8 lead into halftime.

Leeds had also lost full-back Lachie Miller to a hamstring injury inside the opening seven minutes, according to Sky Sports. The home side remained within reach at the interval, but teenage winger Austin Daniel scored his second Super League try to restore Wigan’s 10-point margin before Liam Marshall crossed early in the second half.

Wigan then pulled away as Leeds struggled to turn possession into points against a disciplined defence. Bevan French, who also supplied two assists, added a try before Jai Field scored under the posts after Ryan Hall mishandled a Brodie Croft pass. Keighran completed his hat-trick late in the match and converted again to close the scoring.

The official Leeds Rhinos match report confirmed the seven Wigan tries, with Keighran’s three supplemented by scores from Daniel, Marshall, French and Field. Handley supplied Leeds’ only try, while Connor kicked two goals. The 32-point margin reflected a second half in which Wigan added 24 unanswered points after Leeds had kept the contest competitive before the break.

The result means Wigan will secure the League Leaders' Shield by beating Catalans Dragons at home in the final round. Leeds must defeat Hull FC and hope Wigan loses if the Rhinos are to regain first place. After leading the standings for several months, Leeds now enters the last weekend needing both its own result and help elsewhere, while Wigan has the title race in its own hands.
