Wigan Edge Out Wakefield in Challenge Cup Thriller to Set Up St Helens Semi
Wigan Warriors held off a spirited Wakefield Trinity side to win 26-22 at Belle Vue and book a mouthwatering Challenge Cup semi-final against fierce rivals St Helens.

Wigan Warriors survived a stern test from a rejuvenated Wakefield Trinity side to clinch a 26-22 victory in their Challenge Cup quarter-final at Belle Vue on Sunday, setting up a blockbuster semi-final against St Helens.

The result was far from straightforward for the Warriors, who were without their usual swagger after consecutive defeats in Super League action. Wakefield, joint top of the league table after seven games, arrived as genuine favorites and showed exactly why in the opening exchanges. Tries from Jake Trueman and Ky Rodwell handed Trinity a 12-0 lead that silenced the home support.

But Wigan, rugby league’s most decorated cup team, responded in devastating fashion. Outstanding prop Patrick Mago powered over to halve the deficit before Liam Marshall’s sharp finish brought the scores level. Tom Johnstone’s acrobatic effort restored Wakefield’s lead, but the game’s pivotal moment arrived seven minutes before the break when Wigan found a crucial second wind.

The Warriors’ composure in the final quarter proved decisive. With the match in the balance, Wigan’s superior experience told in the closing stages. A brace of tries from Eckersley completed the fightback, and Sam O’Neill’s pressure on the final play ensured the visitors held on for a famous win.

Head coach Matt Peet acknowledged the narrow margin after the match. "I imagine that was a great game for the neutrals because even though we got the win, it looked like we could have lost it right until the end," he said. The victory sets up a semi-final showdown with St Helens, the competition’s other great superpower, in what promises to be one of the most anticipated last-four ties in years.

For Wakefield, the defeat ends a promising cup run for a club that has not won a major trophy since the 1960s. Despite the result, there is a genuine sense at Belle Vue that brighter days lie ahead after a season of significant investment and an impressive league start. Next month’s meeting at Wembley may have to wait, but the foundation being built in West Yorkshire suggests Trinity will not be far from another tilt at silverware soon.
