Wigan Edge Wakefield in Thrilling Challenge Cup Quarter-Final to Set Up St Helens Showdown
In a contest that had everything — electric attacking rugby, crushing defence, and a finish that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle — Wigan Warriors proved once again why they remain the kings of the Challenge Cup when the pressure is at its highest.
The final scoreline of 26-22 in favour of the Warriors tells only part of the story of a match that saw both teams trade leads in a pulsating affair at Belle Vue.
Wakefield came out of the blocks like a side with nothing to lose. Buoyed by a stellar start to their Super League campaign and the backing of a raucous home crowd, Trinity surged into a 12-0 lead inside the opening quarter. Jake Trueman touched down first, followed shortly after by Ky Rodwell, and for a brief moment it appeared the giant-killing was on.
Wigan's response, however, was the mark of champions. Patrick Mago crashed over to halve the deficit before Liam Marshall produced a brilliant finish to level things up. When Tom Johnstone touched down to restore Wakefield's lead, it felt like the drama was only beginning — and so it proved.
The decisive moment arrived seven minutes before halftime. From there, Wigan's superior game management and composure in the dying minutes made the difference. A double from Ethan Eckersley, whose second try proved the match-winner, settled a breathtaking contest.
Wigan head coach Matt Peet admitted the result could easily have gone the other way. I imagine that was a great game for the neutrals because even though we got the win, it looked like we could have lost it right until the end, he said.
The win sets up a mouthwatering semi-final against St Helens, renewing one of rugby league's most storied rivalries. Holders Hull KR face Warrington Wolves in the other semi-final, meaning the draw has delivered the tie the competition's purists have been craving.
