Wigan Beat Wakefield for Club-Record 12th Straight League Win
Wigan Warriors moved to the top of the Super League table with a 26-12 victory over Wakefield Trinity on Friday, extending their winning sequence to a club-record 12 league matches in the summer era. The Guardian reported that the result took Wigan beyond the 11-game runs achieved in 1998, 2013 and 2023.
Watch the highlights:
Wakefield competed well through the opening 20 minutes at the Brick Community Stadium, but Wigan then took control with three tries in a nine-minute spell. Bevan French opened the scoring after a Wakefield attack broke down, turning the change of possession into a long-range try for the hosts.
Liam Marshall followed with two tries in the corner as Wigan built a decisive advantage before the interval. Adam Keighran converted both of Marshall's scores and added a penalty on the half-time hooter, giving the Warriors a 20-point lead at the break.
Wakefield responded after half-time through Corey Hall, whose try put the visitors on the scoreboard. Trinity then applied a sustained spell of pressure as they sought to reduce the deficit further, but they could not turn that possession into another immediate score.
The decisive moment came with 15 minutes remaining. Wakefield lost the ball while attacking close to Wigan's line, allowing Jai Field to collect it, evade Jack Sinfield and race the length of the field for a try that put the outcome beyond the visitors. Ky Rodwell crossed for Wakefield with 10 minutes left, providing the final score of the match.
The win lifted Wigan above their rivals, although The Guardian noted that Leeds Rhinos had an opportunity to move back ahead when they played in York on Sunday. For Wakefield, the defeat was a second in succession, but their second-half response came with a place in the top six considered highly likely. Wigan, meanwhile, completed a landmark victory in a run that has carried them into first place.
