Wiebes Takes Tour of Britain Opener as Riders Honor Finlay Tarling
Lorena Wiebes won the opening stage of the Tour of Britain Women after the peloton paid tribute to British cyclist Finlay Tarling. The day also brought renewed calls for stronger road-race safety measures.

Lorena Wiebes won the opening stage of the Tour of Britain Women in Cockermouth on a day marked by a tribute to British rider Finlay Tarling and renewed concern about safety in road racing. BBC Sport reported that the Dutch SD Worx-Protime rider sprinted to victory after her team resisted several attacks during the 158.9-kilometre stage.

Watch the highlights:

Before the 114 riders began the race, Tarling’s photograph was shown on a large screen in the town centre and the crowd joined in a minute of applause. The 19-year-old died last week after a high-speed collision with a van that had entered the road during stage eight of the Volta a Portugal, according to the BBC report.

After her victory, Wiebes said parents should not have to fear that their children will fail to return from a race. She added that such an incident could not be allowed to happen again. The 27-year-old, who has more than 100 career victories, made the comments as the cycling community continued to respond to Tarling’s death.

The Tour of Britain uses rolling roadblocks, with police and officials traveling ahead of and behind the peloton, while several roads in central Cockermouth were fully closed. Jonathan Day, event director of British Cycling Ventures, told BBC Sport that the race takes safety extremely seriously and is supported by an experienced organizing team and police central escort group.

British rider Hayley Simmonds also called for collaboration between cycling’s governing body, the UCI, and individual race organizers. She said organizers should be required to demonstrate that safety and road closures have been properly considered. Simmonds recalled the 2023 Tour of the Pyrenees, where rider complaints about traffic contributed to teams withdrawing before the UCI cancelled the race.

The UCI issued condolences to Tarling’s family, friends and teammates following the fatal collision but had made no further comment by the time of the BBC report. The 2026 Tour of Britain Women has five stages for the first time, matching the stage count of the men’s race. The event is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, August 23.
