West Ham beat Wrexham 6-0 as Parkinson demands accountability

West Ham United returned to the top of the Championship with a 6-0 win over Wrexham at London Stadium on Friday, leaving visiting manager Phil Parkinson demanding a response from his players and staff. BBC Sport Wales reported that it was Wrexham's heaviest league defeat in 22 years, matching the margin of their loss at Bournemouth in 2004.

Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring with his sixth goal of the season. Joel Piroe, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Taty Castellanos, Mohamadou Kante and Manor Solomon also scored as West Ham recorded six different goalscorers. For Wrexham, the defeat came before the largest crowd the club has played in front of, according to the BBC report, adding another notable detail to a difficult evening.

Parkinson described the result as one of the lowest moments of his time at Wrexham and said responsibility extended to him as well as the team. Appointed in July 2021 when the club was in the National League, he made clear that both individual players and the coaching staff would have to examine their roles in the performance.

His criticism focused particularly on the defending. Parkinson acknowledged the quality of West Ham's attacking players but said Wrexham should have handled the two first-half goals better. He felt there had been little between the teams in the opening 25 minutes and that his side had reached promising positions. In his assessment, basic defensive shortcomings then allowed confident opponents to take advantage.

Parkinson also pointed to previous matches against Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Coventry and Sheffield United as occasions when Wrexham had performed better against strong opposition. He did not regard West Ham's quality as a sufficient explanation for the scale of Friday's defeat. Instead, he called for greater determination in decisive defensive situations and more resilience across the side.

The manager said setbacks had been part of every season during his tenure, despite the impression that Wrexham's progress had been straightforward. He recalled earlier periods when the team had struggled before recovering its identity. His immediate demand after the London Stadium defeat was for players and staff to accept responsibility and restore the qualities needed to produce a better performance.
