Gago and Asseyi give West Ham first WSL win against London City

West Ham secured their first Women's Super League win of the season by beating London City Lionesses 2-1 at Chigwell Construction Stadium on Saturday. Kelly Gago and Viviane Asseyi scored for the hosts, while Daniëlle van de Donk pulled a goal back for the visitors, according to the Guardian's match report.

Gago opened the scoring in the 21st minute after Seraina Piubel sent a pass forward from near halfway. The striker broke between London City's central defenders, Mapi León and Isa Kardinaal, before taking the ball around goalkeeper Elene Lete to finish. The move gave West Ham the advantage they carried into the interval.

Asseyi extended the lead three minutes into the second half. Released by Riko Ueki, she ran through the visitors' half and scored. London City later reduced the deficit when Van de Donk used a backheel to turn Kadidiatou Diani's low delivery inside the near post, but West Ham retained their one-goal margin.

The defeat came with Alexia Putellas captaining London City from the starting line-up, alongside fellow Spanish starters Lete and León, AS reported. Jana Fernández and Daniela Arqués also featured for Eder Maestre's side. The result left London City with a win and a defeat from their first two league fixtures after a successful opening night against Manchester United.

For Rita Guarino's West Ham, the outcome reversed their opening-weekend setback. The league's own matchweek guide records that they began the campaign with a 3-1 loss at Tottenham. London City, by contrast, had beaten Manchester United 2-1, with a Julia Zigiotti Olme own goal and another backheeled finish from Van de Donk helping to secure that victory.

Saturday also brought West Ham their first WSL victory over London City in the clubs' third meeting in the competition. According to WSL Football, London City won the first encounter 1-0 through Kosovare Asllani. Their next meeting, in March, finished 1-1 after Oona Siren's volley earned West Ham a point. This time the hosts held their lead to take all three.
