Welbeck scores first Chelsea goal in 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Luton

Chelsea moved into the third round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 victory over Luton Town at Stamford Bridge, as Danny Welbeck scored his first goal for the club. The 35-year-old striker, making his first Chelsea start after joining from Brighton, broke the deadlock early in the second half before an Estêvão Willian effort completed the scoring.

The Guardian reported that Chelsea controlled the opening half without finding a way past Luton goalkeeper Josh Keeley. The hosts led the shot count 17-3 by the interval, but Keeley made an early double save from Cole Palmer and later produced a leaping stop to deny Reece James from a free-kick. Luton also blocked shots, cut out passes and defended crosses to keep the match level.

Chelsea came closest before the break when Estêvão attacked down the right and pulled the ball back for Morgan Rogers. Rogers struck his effort first time, but it hit the crossbar. Welbeck had earlier pressed successfully to regain possession before seeing a shot blocked, while Luton continued to withstand the pressure generated by Chelsea's strong lineup.

The breakthrough followed an increase in tempo after halftime. Estêvão released the overlapping Malo Gusto, whose cross found Welbeck after the forward moved away from his marker. Welbeck powered a header past Keeley to put Chelsea ahead and give the home side a reward for its sustained pressure.

Palmer then struck the crossbar from 20 yards as Chelsea sought a second goal. It arrived after Valentín Barco won possession and Palmer supplied Estêvão. The winger's shot took a deflection off Luton midfielder Hakeem Odoffin before going in, establishing the final 2-0 margin.

The result gave Chelsea a place in the next round after a composed performance against a Luton side sitting third in League One. Goalkeeper Mike Penders made his Chelsea debut and had little work to do, according to The Guardian's match report. Chelsea were without Enzo Fernández, while Moisés Caicedo was also unavailable, but remained patient through the goalless first half and converted that control into two goals after the interval.
