Warwickshire Survive Late Collapse to Beat Sussex by One Wicket
Chris Woakes struck the winning boundary as Warwickshire chased 203 with one wicket remaining at Edgbaston. Vansh Jani and Dan Mousley had earlier built the partnership that put the hosts in position to win.

Warwickshire completed a tense one-wicket victory over Sussex at Edgbaston on Saturday, reaching 206 for nine in pursuit of 203 on the third day of their County Championship Division One match. Chris Woakes finished unbeaten on 23 and hit the winning boundary after Sussex had reduced the chase to its final wicket.

Watch the highlights:

BBC Sport, carrying a report from the ECB Reporters' Network, said Sussex resumed their second innings on 84 for three and were dismissed for 207. Tom Haines made 67, the first half-century of the match, before Ed Barnard had him caught at second slip. Ethan Bamber took three for 42, while Woakes removed James Coles and later trapped Jaydev Unadkat leg before wicket.

Warwickshire then lost three early wickets. Sean Hunt bowled Rob Yates, Zen Malik edged Unadkat to the wicketkeeper, and Henry Crocombe dismissed Will Young leg before. Vansh Jani and Dan Mousley changed the direction of the chase with a fourth-wicket partnership of 107 in 24 overs. Jani made 62, his maiden first-class half-century, and Mousley contributed 58.

Hunt brought Sussex back into contention with three wickets in 11 balls. Mousley was caught at mid-off, Barnard edged behind and Jani was caught at second slip. When Alex Davies also edged Crocombe to slip, Warwickshire still required 47 runs with only three wickets available. Hunt finished with five for 65 and nine wickets in the match.

Woakes first added 23 with Michael Booth before Booth played on to Hunt. Another 23-run stand with Bamber took Warwickshire level, but Bamber then edged Crocombe to the wicketkeeper. Woakes and last batter Ollie Hannon-Dalby faced 13 consecutive dot balls before Woakes edged Unadkat for four to end the match.

The result gave Warwickshire 19 points and Sussex three. Sussex had made 156 in the first innings before Warwickshire replied with 161, leaving the visitors five runs behind. Warwickshire's successful chase strengthened their position in the title race and set up a home match against reigning champions Nottinghamshire next week, while Sussex remained in contention despite the narrow defeat.
