Warwickshire Sign Jake Weatherald for 2027 County Championship
Warwickshire have signed Australia opener Jake Weatherald for the 2027 County Championship season after his productive spell with Leicestershire. The move places the left-hander at Edgbaston before the next Ashes series in England.

Warwickshire have signed Australia Test opener Jake Weatherald for the 2027 County Championship season, adding an experienced left-handed batter to their top order. BBC Sport reported the agreement on Wednesday, with the county confirming that Weatherald will join the Bears at Edgbaston.

Watch the highlights:

The 31-year-old has played six Tests for Australia. He made his international debut during last winter's Ashes series, scoring 201 runs in the contest and registering a best innings of 72 in Brisbane as Australia won the series 4-1.

Weatherald has already produced a strong county return in England. During a six-match spell with Leicestershire this summer, he scored 483 runs at an average of 60.37. That stint included one century and three half-centuries, giving Warwickshire recent evidence of his ability to adapt to Championship conditions.

His broader first-class record extends beyond 6,000 runs and includes 14 centuries. Warwickshire performance director James Thomas said the club had admired Weatherald for a long time and viewed him as a proven high-level performer who would strengthen the batting at the top of the order. Thomas also pointed to the opener's productive Leicestershire spell and the incentive of pressing his case before the Ashes.

Weatherald said the opportunity to play for Warwickshire was one he could not pass up. He described Edgbaston as one of cricket's great grounds and said he had enjoyed playing in England this year. The chance to return with the Bears ahead of the Ashes added to the appeal of the move.

Australia are due to tour England for the next Ashes series. Weatherald will be seeking to regain his place in the Test squad after being dropped following Australia's home defeat by Bangladesh. His full Championship season with Warwickshire will therefore carry both county significance and a possible international consequence, although selection remains uncertain.
