Warwickshire Bring Jim Troughton Back as Batting Coach

What happened: Warwickshire have appointed former captain and head coach Jim Troughton as their batting coach from the end of the current season. BBC Sport reports that the 47-year-old will return to Edgbaston to replace Matt Walker, who is leaving Warwickshire to join Sussex.

The move brings Troughton back to the county where he spent his entire 14-year playing career before serving four years as head coach. He captained Warwickshire to the County Championship title in 2012 and later guided the Bears to promotion in 2018 after taking charge of the team for the 2017 season.

Troughton has built further coaching experience away from Birmingham since leaving Warwickshire at the end of the 2020 season. He first worked as a batting coach at Somerset and then spent five years with Surrey. During his time in south London, Surrey won three consecutive County Championship titles from 2022 through 2024 under former England players Alec Stewart and Gareth Batty.

Warwickshire head coach Ian Westwood said the county conducted a full recruitment process following Walker's decision to depart. According to Westwood, Troughton's batting knowledge, familiarity with the club and its players, and ability to fit alongside the existing staff helped make him the leading candidate. Westwood also acknowledged Walker's standing with the squad and the challenge involved in replacing him.

Troughton's connection with Warwickshire began in the club's development system, where he emerged at about the same time as Ian Bell. He made his first-class debut in 2001 and went on to score more than 14,000 runs across all formats before back problems brought his playing career to an end. He also made six one-day international appearances for England.

Why it matters: Warwickshire are filling a key coaching role with someone who combines deep knowledge of the county with recent experience inside a title-winning setup. As a player, Troughton was part of the Bears teams that won the 2002 Benson & Hedges Cup, the 2010 CB40 and County Championships in 2004 and 2012. His appointment now opens another chapter at Edgbaston after successful spells as player, captain and head coach.
