Warwickshire Crush Hampshire to Keep County Championship Title Push Alive

Warwickshire strengthened their County Championship title challenge with an innings-and-129-run victory over Hampshire inside three days at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton. BBC Sport reported that India Test spinner Manav Suthar took seven wickets in the match as Hampshire lost 14 wickets on the third day and suffered another damaging defeat in Division One.

Warwickshire's first-innings total of 398, built around Rob Yates' 109, proved far beyond the hosts. Hampshire resumed their first innings on 74 for six and were dismissed for 115 after a delayed start, losing their last four wickets in exactly an hour. Olly Hannon-Dalby removed Andrew Neal to complete figures of three for 14, while Suthar dismissed James Fuller lbw before Ethan Bamber accounted for Ben Brown and Kyle Abbott.

Asked to follow on, Hampshire quickly lost both openers. Chris Woakes bowled Ali Orr with a ball that moved back into him, then Nick Gubbins edged to second slip. Toby Albert and Jake Lehmann offered resistance, adding 66 before Lehmann was run out for 42 and Albert edged to slip. Their stand delayed Warwickshire but did not change the direction of the match.

Hampshire reached 128 for four before losing their final six wickets for 26 runs. Ben Mayes was stumped, Neal fell lbw and Fuller edged to slip. Hannon-Dalby then bowled Scott Currie and trapped Eddie Jack lbw, before Abbott chipped a catch to cover to end the innings at 154. Suthar took four for 52 in the second innings and finished with match figures of seven for 94.

The result earned Warwickshire 22 points and left them five points behind new Division One leaders Somerset, who also completed an innings victory on Friday. The Bears remain firmly involved in the title race with three matches left in the campaign.

For Hampshire, the defeat brought only two points and left them 31 points from safety. It was also the fourth consecutive match in which they had been dismissed for fewer than 200 in their first innings. BBC Sport noted that Hampshire have collected only three batting bonus points this season and now face away matches at Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire before their final home fixture on September 24.
