Warrington Hold Off Hull FC for Sixth Straight Super League Win

Warrington Wolves held off a late Hull FC comeback to win 16-14 and record their sixth successive Super League victory. BBC Sport reported that the third-placed Wolves moved to within two points of Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors, preserving their hopes of finishing in the top two.

The wet conditions in East Yorkshire contributed to an attritional contest. Hull’s James Batchelor was sent to the sin-bin in the opening minute for a tackle on Arron Lindop, who subsequently failed a head injury assessment. Warrington captain George Williams opened the scoring with a penalty after 18 minutes, before Aidan Sezer kicked a Hull penalty to level the game at 2-2.

The match changed in the final five minutes of the first half. Hull made two errors under high kicks in a three-minute spell, and Warrington punished both. Leon Hayes crossed first before Matty Ashton scored his 18th try of the season, sending the visitors into the interval with a 12-2 advantage.

Hull were reduced to 12 players again when Ligi Sao was sin-binned for a high tackle on Ashton. Josh Thewlis then scored Warrington’s third try 10 minutes into the second half. Williams converted two of the visitors’ three tries as Warrington established a 16-2 lead.

The home side responded with 15 minutes remaining. Ethan O’Neill scored Hull’s first try on the left, and Tom Briscoe quickly added another in his final home appearance before retirement. Briscoe’s score was the 233rd try of his career, while Sezer’s conversions reduced Warrington’s lead to two points.

Hull pressed for another score in the closing stages, but Warrington’s defence protected the narrow advantage through the final whistle. The defeat was Hull’s 18th in 25 Super League matches this season. Warrington next travel to fourth-placed Wakefield on Saturday, while Hull are due to visit Toulouse Olympique on Friday.
