Wallaroos beat Scotland 38-31 to complete sweep in Smith and Chancellor farewell
Australia completed a three-match sweep of Scotland with a 38-31 victory at GIO Stadium in Canberra on Friday, October 23, ending their 2026 Test season with a win. According to Rugby Australia's match report, the Wallaroos overturned a half-time deficit on a night marking the international farewells of Cecilia Smith and Emily Chancellor.
Watch the highlights:
Amelia Whitaker and Maya Stewart scored Australia's opening tries, but the hosts could not maintain their early advantage. Scotland responded with three tries before the interval to lead 17-14. Yellow cards for Smith and fly-half Waiaria Ellis left Australia short-handed as the visitors turned sustained pressure into a narrow half-time lead.
Faitala Moleka restored Australia's advantage after the restart, and Piper Duck added another try before Scotland answered through Rhona Lloyd. Samantha Wood kicked a penalty, then captain Siokapesi Palu Sekona finished a move launched from deep to help put the hosts 38-24 ahead. Scotland kept the contest alive through a late Rachel Malcolm try, but a final turnover secured the Australian victory.
World Rugby's account of the match reported that Smith received a second yellow card late in the game, ending her farewell appearance with a red. Her departure closed an international career of 34 Tests. Rugby Australia's retirement announcement records that Smith was born in Samoa, grew up in Leeton in New South Wales and began playing rugby at 22. She made her Test debut against New Zealand in Tauranga in 2022 and went on to represent Australia at two World Cups.
Smith also contributed a try against Scotland when Australia won WXV 2 in 2024. Her international retirement does not necessarily end her playing career: Rugby Australia said she remained open to another season of Super Rugby Women's. Chancellor, meanwhile, finished with 42 caps after announcing her retirement earlier in the week. She started this final Test at openside flanker alongside Palu Sekona and Duck in the back row.
The match also brought a personal landmark for replacement prop Eva Karpani, who became the second Wallaroo to reach 50 Tests. Rugby Australia's team announcement traced her pathway from sevens to a Test debut against Japan in 2019. Her milestone appearance coincided with a winning finish for two departing teammates and a clean sweep against Scotland.
