Wales Hand Test Debuts to Singleton and Aiono for Six Nations Opener
Wales head coach Sean Lynn has rewarded two emerging talents with their first international caps, naming Seren Singleton and Jorja Aiono in the starting XV for Saturday's Women's Six Nations opener against Scotland at Cardiff Arms Park.
Both players have impressed during the inaugural Celtic Challenge competition, representing Brython Thunder and catching the eye of the coaching staff with their commitment and physicality. Lock Aiono brings the edge and aggression that Lynn believes Wales need in their pack, while wing Singleton's work ethic and fearless approach have earned her a place in the backline.
"Jorja and Seren fully deserve this opportunity," Lynn explained. "They've shown real quality in the Celtic Challenge and demonstrated the attributes we're looking for. Jorja has that physicality we need up front, and Seren's willingness to put her body on the line epitomizes what we want from this team."
The selections highlight Lynn's commitment to building for the future after a difficult period for Welsh women's rugby. The team endured consecutive wooden spoon finishes in the previous two Six Nations campaigns and suffered disappointment at last summer's World Cup, where they failed to progress beyond the pool stage.
Captain Kate Williams leads a side showing a blend of youth and experience. Former skipper Hannah Dallavalle prepares for her 70th international appearance from the bench, while the absence of established players like Carys Phillips and Jasmine Joyce from the matchday squad signals Lynn's intent to refresh the team culture.
The pack features an experienced back row combination of Williams, Bethan Lewis, and Bryonie King. In the front row, Gwenllian Pyrs, Kelsey Jones, and Sisilia Tuipulotu reunite, with Gwen Crabb partnering debutant Aiono in the second row.
Halfbacks Keira Bevan and Lleucu George provide stability in the spine of the team, while Kayleigh Powell gets the nod at fullback ahead of other contenders. The midfield partnership of Carys Cox and Courtney Keight continues their development from the World Cup, flanked by Lisa Neumann and newcomer Singleton on the wings.
Lynn has opted for a forward-heavy bench with a six-two split, ensuring plenty of pack power for the closing stages. The bench includes seasoned campaigners Donna Rose, Georgia Evans, and Dallavalle, providing crucial experience should the game reach a critical juncture.
With nine uncapped players in the extended squad and new backroom staff in place, this represents a genuine fresh start for Welsh rugby. Lynn acknowledges the significance of the moment, emphasizing that his players understand they represent not just themselves, but their families and the entire nation.
"This is our opportunity to show who we are and what wearing the red jersey means," Lynn stated. "We've had extensive discussions about selection, and this team reflects our vision for the future."
