Wales International Dee Returns After Six-Month Injury Layoff for Dragons
Elliot Dee will make his first appearance since September when Dragons face Stormers in Cape Town after recovering from shoulder surgery.

Wales hooker Elliot Dee will make his long-awaited return to competitive rugby when Dragons face Stormers in Cape Town on Sunday, marking his first appearance since suffering a shoulder injury during the opening weekend of the United Rugby Championship season.

The 32-year-old veteran has been named in the starting lineup for the crucial fixture that kicks off at 13:00 GMT, bringing an end to a frustrating six-month rehabilitation period that required surgical intervention.

Dee sustained the shoulder problem against Ulster at the end of September, initially hoping to return quickly without requiring an operation. However, collaborative discussions between the player, Dragons medical staff, and Wales management ultimately led to surgery being deemed necessary.

Head coach Filo Tiatia praised the hooker determination during his recovery process, highlighting his competitive spirit in training sessions. Elliot has been working really hard and competing with all the other hookers, Tiatia explained. I love the way that he has been really competitive in training - he has come close to blows in a couple of moments with other players.

The timing of Dee injury proved particularly unfortunate, as he had hoped to feature prominently in Steve Tandy first Wales squad during the autumn series. He wanted to put himself right for the autumn series, Tiatia revealed. There was collaborative discussion around how we could get him back early but it did not quite work out.

Dee injury-prone recent seasons have limited his appearances for Dragons, failing to reach double figures in each of the last three campaigns. Despite these setbacks, his international credentials remain intact, having earned 56 caps for Wales and featuring in all five Six Nations matches during the 2025 championship.

The experienced hooker return provides a significant boost for Dragons as they continue their United Rugby Championship campaign. Tiatia has made seven changes to the side that drew with Benetton in Newport, with Dee joining full-back Cai Evans, wing Jared Rosser, centre Fetuli Paea, scrum-half Rhodri Williams, loose-head prop Jordan Morris, and number eight Harrison Keddie in the starting XV.

Notably absent from the Dragons squad will be fly-half Tinus de Beer, who has been ruled out due to a hand injury. The South African playmaker, who has featured in all 16 fixtures this season since joining from Cardiff, will link up with the squad next week ahead of their Saturday fixture against Lions in Johannesburg.

Tiatia spoke highly of de Beer contributions both on and off the field. Tinus has been outstanding, not just on the field but off it, the coach noted. He has been great for the mentality of the group and is one of the toughest players I have worked with.

In de Beer absence, Angus O Brien moves to fly-half with Evans starting at full-back, while fellow Wales international Brodie Coghlan provides hooking cover on the bench.

The fixture in Cape Town presents a challenging test for Dragons, facing a Stormers side bolstered by several returning players. Wing Seabelo Senatla and centre Dan du Plessis both return from injury, while the back line will be marshalled by Springboks superstar fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu.

Strong-running number eight Evan Roos, who has scored seven tries in 13 games this season, also returns after missing the derby victory against Bulls. His physical presence and try-scoring threat will test Dragons defensive resolve.

For Dee, the return represents validation of his perseverance through a difficult period, offering the opportunity to rebuild match fitness and demonstrate his continued value at both regional and international levels.
