Wales Hand Test Debuts to Singleton and Aiono for Six Nations Opener Against Scotland

Wales head coach Sean Lynn has named two uncapped players in his starting lineup for Saturday's Women's Six Nations opener against Scotland, handing Test debuts to wing Seren Singleton and lock Jorja Aiono.

Both players have impressed for Brython Thunder in the Celtic Challenge, earning their first international call-ups as Lynn seeks to rebuild a Welsh side that has endured back-to-back wooden spoon campaigns and a disappointing World Cup pool stage exit last summer.

Singleton and Aiono are among ten players in the starting fifteen who have featured in this season's Celtic Challenge, highlighting Lynn's commitment to developing homegrown talent through the domestic competition.

"Jorja and Seren fully deserve this opportunity and have impressed in the Celtic Challenge and in camp," Lynn explained. "Jorja has a real physicality and edge to her game that we need and Seren's work-ethic and willingness to put her body on the line for the cause are the attributes we are looking for."

Captain Kate Williams will lead an experienced back row alongside Bethan Lewis and Bryonie King, with the trio tasked with providing leadership during what Lynn describes as a "fresh start" for Welsh rugby.

The front row sees Gwenllian Pyrs, Kelsey Jones and Sisilia Tuipulotu reunite, while Gwen Crabb partners newcomer Aiono in the second row. Keira Bevan and Lleucu George form the half-back pairing, with Kayleigh Powell selected at full-back.

The backline features an intriguing midfield partnership of Carys Cox and Courtney Keight, given further opportunity to develop their combination from the World Cup campaign. Lisa Neumann joins debutant Singleton on the wings.

Notably absent from the match day squad are international regulars Carys Phillips and Jasmine Joyce, signaling Lynn's determination to move in a new direction. Former captain Hannah Dallavalle has been named among the replacements and is set to earn her 70th cap, while captain Alex Callender has been ruled out of the entire tournament through injury.

Lynn has opted for a six-two split of forwards and backs on the bench, including the experience of Donna Rose and Georgia Evans alongside Dallavalle, providing veteran leadership to support the newer faces.

The selection represents the culmination of twelve months in charge for Lynn, who inherited a team desperately seeking improvement after consecutive disappointing campaigns. With nine uncapped players in the overall squad and a completely revamped backroom staff, the coach believes he finally has the foundation for progress.

"This is a fresh start for Wales and is the first step for this new group of players, coaches and staff," Lynn stated. "We had plenty of debate around the selection of this team. The players know we are representing the nation, our families and ourselves and this is an opportunity to show who we are and what it means to wear the red jersey."

Wales face Scotland at 16:40 BST on Saturday in their opening fixture of the tournament, which runs from April 11 to May 17. All matches will be available live on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app.
