Wales edge Albania 1-0 as Wilkinson calls for higher standards
An Ezmiralda Franja own goal gave Wales a narrow World Cup play-off win in Albania. Rhian Wilkinson praised her side’s resilience but said their performance needed to improve.

Wales secured a 1-0 away victory over Albania in their Women's World Cup qualifying play-off semi-final, but head coach Rhian Wilkinson acknowledged that the performance fell short of the standards she wanted. BBC Sport Wales reported that Ezmiralda Franja's own goal before the interval decided the opening leg in Shkoder, giving Wales a narrow advantage in the tie.

Watch the highlights:

The result did not reflect a comfortable evening for the visitors. Albania, who are 37 positions below Wales in the Fifa rankings, produced the strongest scoring opportunities, according to the BBC's match reporting. Franja, Fortesa Berisha and Megi Doci each threatened for the hosts, while Wales struggled to generate much attacking danger of their own.

Wilkinson had made avoiding conceding the principal objective for the trip, and Wales achieved that despite Albania's chances. She nevertheless said her team had not defended particularly well. Her positive assessment centred instead on the players' determination to remain in the contest, describing their ability to persevere through a difficult away performance as evidence of progress during her time in charge.

The coach welcomed the win without treating it as a completed task. She said Wales needed to finish the job at home and improve their level, while acknowledging that Albania had competed closely throughout. The outcome also extended a pattern from Wales' three away fixtures in the qualifying group: securing useful results while remaining dissatisfied with parts of their displays.

Wales' home results during their successful Group B4 campaign included a 4-0 victory over Albania in Wrexham and a 3-1 win against the Czech Republic in Cardiff. The return against Albania takes place at Parc y Scarlets in Llanelli on Tuesday, 13 October. Wilkinson said her side would need to meet Albania's energy rather than assume the first-leg lead would be enough.

Progress would put Wales into a two-leg play-off final in December, with Norway the likely opponents after winning 2-0 away to Romania on Friday. That pairing is not yet confirmed. Nor would winning the next round necessarily guarantee qualification: BBC Sport reported that Wales might still need to contest inter-confederation play-offs in February to reach the World Cup in Brazil.
