Wakefield beat Wigan 33-6 to reach first Super League Grand Final

Wakefield Trinity reached their first Super League Grand Final with a 33-6 away victory over Wigan Warriors, ending the hosts' bid for a treble. BBC Sport reported that Trinity scored five tries and kept Wigan scoreless after the interval, turning an 8-6 half-time advantage into a decisive play-off semi-final win. They will face Warrington Wolves at Old Trafford on Saturday, 3 October.

Wigan struck first through Brad O'Neill, with Adam Keighran adding the conversion, before Tom Johnstone replied for Wakefield. That opening score proved to be the Warriors' only try. Trinity went on to collect 33 points without reply, overturning the early deficit against a side that had entered the match on a 16-game winning streak and already held two trophies.

The decisive burst came after Keighran was sent to the sin-bin in the 46th minute. Wakefield scored three tries during his absence, with Johnstone adding his second before Jack Sinfield and Corey Hall also crossed. Ky Rodwell supplied Trinity's fifth try, while Max Jowitt finished with six successful goal kicks and Mason Lino contributed a drop-goal to complete the scoring.

For Wigan, the defeat ended hopes of adding the Super League title to the Challenge Cup and League Leaders' Shield they had already secured in 2026. It also stopped their attempt to reach a fourth successive Grand Final. Wakefield's progress means the title decider will produce a first-time Grand Final winner, with Warrington having lost all four of their previous appearances, most recently in 2018.

The result marks another major step in Wakefield's recovery after relegation in 2023. Trinity were playing in the Championship in 2024, before returning to the top division in 2025. Under owner Matt Ellis and head coach Daryl Powell, they have now advanced from the second tier to a Grand Final in two years. Johnstone rejoined for that top-flight return after two seasons with Catalans Dragons.

Powell will now meet a former club in the final, having left Warrington midway through the 2023 season after a spell lasting around a year and a half. He previously guided Castleford Tigers to the 2017 Grand Final, which they lost. His Wakefield side's semi-final win guarantees a sixth club will join the list of Grand Final champions, following Hull KR's first triumph in 2025.
