Wakefield beat Warrington 23-10 to win first Super League title
Wakefield Trinity won their first Super League title with a 23-10 victory over Warrington Wolves at Old Trafford on Saturday, ending a wait for the league championship stretching back to 1968. The Guardian's match report described a decisive first-half performance from Daryl Powell's side, who led 19-0 at the interval and kept control after the break.
Watch the highlights:
Jack Sinfield's drop goal shortly before half-time added to Wakefield's advantage and left Warrington facing a substantial recovery. Arron Lindop scored early in the second half to give the Wolves hope, but Trinity resisted the challenge. Tom Johnstone scored after the interval and received the Rob Burrow Award as the final's man of the match.
The victory completed a rapid turnaround for a club relegated to the Championship in 2023. Owner Matt Ellis took over that year and pledged to deliver a major trophy within five years, according to the Guardian. Wakefield reached the top of Super League within three, with seven members of the final team having played for the club in the second tier two years earlier.
BBC Sport reported that Trinity had finished fourth before beating Leigh in a home play-off eliminator and overcoming Wigan in the semi-finals. Their final victory made them the sixth club to lift the Super League trophy. More than 30,000 tickets were sold to Wakefield supporters for the Old Trafford occasion, with the total crowd exceeding 71,000 for the sold-out match.
Powell credited the work of the players, coaches and wider club over the preceding three years. Johnstone, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live before the final, had described improvements in facilities, recruitment and ambition under Ellis. Captain Mike McMeeken said afterwards that the achievement had not yet fully registered and highlighted the importance of rewarding supporters who stayed loyal through the club's difficult period.
For Warrington, the defeat prolonged a league-title wait dating to 1955 and marked a fifth successive loss in Old Trafford deciders, the Guardian reported. Coach Sam Burgess acknowledged his players' disappointment after falling short again. Wakefield, meanwhile, were due to celebrate with their supporters on Sunday, bringing the championship back to a city whose previous league triumph came 58 years earlier.
