Vuelta Leader Tadej Pogačar Withdraws After Stage Eight Crash

Tadej Pogačar has withdrawn from the 2026 Vuelta a España after crashing during stage eight on Saturday. The crash occurred late on the route from Puçol to Xeraco, with Spanish reports placing it roughly 32 kilometres from the finish near Simat de Valldigna. La Vanguardia reported that the peloton was still together, had passed the intermediate sprint and was approaching the Barx climb when Pogačar went down.

Race medical staff treated the Slovenian on the road before he left the stage in an ambulance. Reports described visible blood and injuries around his left elbow, shoulder and face, but no firm medical diagnosis had been announced in the initial coverage. Pogačar was clearly in pain and did not attempt to continue racing.

Pogačar had worn the Vuelta leader’s jersey since the opening day and entered stage eight at the head of the general classification.
