Vincent Kompany hospitalised after collapse as Bayern staff take over duties
Bayern Munich say Vincent Kompany is undergoing examinations after collapsing while watching reserve-team training. His coaching staff will oversee training and matches until further notice.

Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital after collapsing while watching Bayern Munich's reserve team train on Friday, the club confirmed. The 40-year-old first-team manager is undergoing examinations and will remain under medical supervision. According to BBC Sport, Bayern have put his coaching staff in charge of training and matches until further notice, with their next Bundesliga fixture against Freiburg on Sunday.

Watch the highlights:

Kompany had already been unwell with a virus before the incident. He missed Tuesday's news conference ahead of Bayern's Champions League match against Arsenal, with assistant Aaron Danks handling the media duties instead. Kompany nevertheless returned to the touchline for Wednesday's game. The club's statement about Friday's collapse did not give a diagnosis or a timetable for his return to work.

BBC Sport reported that German media described Kompany's condition in hospital as stable. German football journalist Taufig Khalil also told BBC Radio 5 Live that Bayern had communicated that he was stable. Khalil said the manager had been suffering from the virus for about a week. Although a helicopter attended the training ground, Khalil said Kompany was transported to hospital by a medical vehicle rather than by air.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said the club's immediate concern was Kompany's health and that he would receive the care, support and recovery time he needed. Eberl also expressed confidence in the coaching team taking over his responsibilities. The arrangements leave Kompany's colleagues overseeing preparations for Freiburg while he remains under medical care, rather than setting a deadline for him to resume his duties.

Kompany joined Bayern from Burnley in May 2024, succeeding Thomas Tuchel. He had led Burnley to the Championship title in 2022-23 before relegation from the Premier League the following season. Since moving to Munich, he has won the Bundesliga in each of his first two seasons and taken Bayern to the 2025-26 Champions League semi-finals, where they lost to eventual winners Paris St-Germain.

Manchester City and Burnley both issued messages wishing their former player and manager a swift recovery. Kompany spent 11 years playing for City, collecting four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups. City's message recognised his standing as a former captain, while Burnley also sent their best wishes following the news of his hospital admission.
