Villa Latest: Emery Labels Fulham Defeat as Good Opportunity Lost
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery cut a frustrated figure after his side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Fulham at Villa Park, labelling the result as a "good opportunity lost" in their pursuit of European qualification.
Watch the highlights:
Fulham secured only their second away win since December through goals from Andreas Pereira and Alex Iwobi, either side of Ollie Watkins' equaliser. The result leaves Villa six points adrift of the top six with four games remaining.
Emery was particularly critical of his team's defensive frailties. "The way we conceded the second goal was not acceptable. We had control of the match and gave away two poor goals," the Spanish manager said. "This is a good opportunity lost for us. We need to be more consistent in these crucial moments."
The defeat comes at a terrible time for Villa, who had been riding high following their Champions League qualification last season. With matches against Tottenham, Liverpool, and Manchester United still to come, the challenge of securing European football for a second consecutive campaign appears increasingly difficult.
Fulham manager Marco Silva was delighted with his side's performance. "The players showed great character and commitment. These are difficult places to come and get results," Silva said. "We've shown again today that we can compete with anyone in this league when we're at our best."
The Cottagers move up to 11th in the table with the victory, while Villa remain 10th, though their European hopes are fading rapidly with the season entering its crucial final stretch.
