Villa's Johan Manzambi nominated for Ballon d'Or young player award

Aston Villa forward Johan Manzambi is among the nominees for the best young player award at the Ballon d'Or ceremony, following a season that brought European recognition and a prominent role for Switzerland at the World Cup. BBC Sport reported that the summer signing is in contention alongside Barcelona's Lamine Yamal, Real Madrid's Yan Diomande and Manchester City midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Manzambi scored three times in four World Cup appearances before a knee injury brought his tournament to an end. That contribution came only a year after his senior international debut. At club level, he was named the Europa League's Young Player of the Season after helping Freiburg reach the final in May, when the German side lost to his future employers, Villa.

His move to England followed 12 goals in 61 appearances for Freiburg. According to BBC Sport, he signed a five-year contract at Villa and became the most expensive Swiss player, exceeding the previous benchmark set by Granit Xhaka's move to Arsenal. Newcastle had agreed a deal with Freiburg but had not secured Manzambi's agreement before Villa completed their move for the versatile attacker.

The nomination comes after a development path through Servette and Freiburg's youth systems. Manzambi left Servette for Germany as a 17-year-old in 2023, then made his Freiburg first-team debut against Heidenheim a year later. Bernhard Weis, who first selected him for Freiburg's under-19 side, told BBC Sport that his initial months had been difficult, with improvements in physical strength helping him progress. Weis also said Manzambi learned German within three months.

His final Bundesliga season provided evidence of that progress. BBC Sport reported that, among players in his position, he led the league for progressive carries of at least 10 metres, with 116, as well as shot-ending carries, with 13, and fouls won, with 78. Those figures accompanied his European award and preceded his goals for Switzerland on the World Cup stage.

Massimo Lombardo, Servette's academy director, told BBC Sport that the speed of Manzambi's rise had surprised many people. Having worked with him from the age of 15, Lombardo highlighted his enthusiasm, courage and determination to influence matches. Weis likewise said he had seen first-team potential, but had not expected recognition at the Ballon d'Or ceremony to arrive so quickly.
