Van Dijk's 100th-Minute Winner Downs Everton in Dramatic Merseyside Derby
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk heads home a dramatic winner deep into stoppage time as the Reds secure a crucial 2-1 victory over Everton in an emotionally charged Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk emerged as the hero of a pulsating Merseyside derby, heading home a remarkable 100th-minute winner to secure a 2-1 victory over Everton at Anfield on Sunday.

Watch the highlights:

The Dutch centre-back rose highest from a corner deep into added time to power a header past Jordan Pickford, sending the home crowd into raptures and maintaining Liverpool's push for a top-four Premier League finish. The goal, which came in the dying moments of second-half stoppage time, sparked jubilant scenes as Anfield erupted in celebration.

"It was an incredible feeling," Van Dijk said after the match. "These derbies mean so much to everyone at this club, to the fans, to everyone. To score in that moment, in that way, it's difficult to put into words."

Everton had taken a first-half lead through a clinical finish from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who pounced on a defensive lapse to give the Toffees a 1-0 advantage at the interval. Liverpool equalised through Mohamed Salah's composed strike midway through the second half, setting up a tense final 20 minutes.

The match was marred by concerning scenes as Everton's James Garner was stretchered off with a serious-looking injury in the second half, requiring prolonged treatment on the pitch before being taken to hospital for further assessment.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised his side's persistence in grinding out a result that keeps them firmly in the Champions League qualification places. "We showed tremendous character today," Slot commented. "These matches against Everton are never easy, and to find that winner so late shows the quality and mentality of this squad."

The victory extends Liverpool's unbeaten run in all competitions to six matches and moves them within touching distance of the Premier League's top four with crucial fixtures still to come.
