Usain Bolt Listed in Wythenshawe Veterans Squad
Usain Bolt appears set to join Wythenshawe FC Veterans after his name was added to the Greater Manchester team’s online squad list. PA Media, reporting through The Guardian, said the eight-time Olympic champion is listed as a player on the Football Association’s Full-Time website, although Wythenshawe have not formally announced a signing.
Watch the highlights:
The team compete in the Cheshire Veterans League and have assembled a roster containing extensive Premier League experience. Former Manchester City and Republic of Ireland midfielder Stephen Ireland manages the side, whose players have included Danny Drinkwater, Antonio Valencia, Joleon Lescott, Emile Heskey, Marc Albrighton, Nedum Onuoha and Papiss Cissé.
According to the report, Wythenshawe’s squad collectively accounted for more than 1,800 appearances in the English top flight last season. Bolt’s inclusion would add one of world sport’s most recognisable names to a group already featuring several players who competed at the highest level of English football.
Bolt, now 40, retired from athletics after the 2017 World Championships. The Jamaican remains the world-record holder in both the 100 metres and 200 metres, achievements that defined a career in which he won eight Olympic gold medals. His appearance on Wythenshawe’s list points to another return to organized football, but the club had not confirmed his involvement at the time of the report.
Football has remained a regular part of Bolt’s sporting life since his retirement from sprinting. He briefly pursued a professional career with Australian club Central Coast Mariners in 2018. He has also made repeated appearances in Soccer Aid charity matches during the past decade and is a well-known Manchester United supporter.
No debut date or appearance schedule was given, and the report said Wythenshawe had been contacted for comment. Until the club provides an announcement, Bolt’s registration on the FA platform is the clearest confirmation available that he could feature for the veterans team during the new campaign.
