USA Reaches World Baseball Classic Final Despite Controversial Finish
Team USA defeated Dominican Republic 2-1 in a thrilling semifinal marred by a disputed final strike call that ended the game.

The United States advanced to their third consecutive World Baseball Classic championship game after edging the Dominican Republic 2-1 in a dramatic semifinal that concluded with one of the tournament's most controversial calls.

Gunnar Henderson and Roman Anthony provided the offensive spark with solo home runs, while the American pitching staff successfully neutralized what many considered the most explosive lineup in the tournament. The victory sets up a final matchup with either Italy or Venezuela for the championship.

The contest remained tight throughout, with both teams showcasing elite defensive play. Aaron Judge demonstrated his cannon arm in the third inning, firing a 95.7 mph laser from right field to nail Fernando Tatis Jr. at third base. The Dominican Republic answered back with spectacular defense of their own when Julio Rodríguez scaled the center-field wall to rob Judge of a potential home run in the fifth inning.

Paul Skenes, the National League Cy Young Award winner, started for Team USA and delivered a solid performance through 4.1 innings. He surrendered just one run on six hits before turning the game over to a bullpen that held the Dominican Republic scoreless for the remainder of the contest.

Junior Caminero put the Dominicans on the board first with a second-inning solo shot off Skenes, marking the team's tournament-record 15th home run and surpassing Mexico's 2009 mark. Henderson responded in the fourth with a clutch homer off Luis Severino to level the score, before Anthony delivered the decisive blow with his go-ahead blast against Gregory Soto.

The Dominican Republic, appearing in their first semifinal since capturing the 2013 championship, refused to go quietly. In the ninth inning, with closer Mason Miller on the mound, Rodríguez drew a walk and advanced to third base, bringing the tying run just 90 feet away.

With two outs and the dangerous Tatis Jr. stepping to the plate, Miller struck out Geraldo Perdomo on what should have been a routine save. However, the final pitch on a full count appeared to cross the plate several inches below the strike zone, according to television replays and social media analysis.

The controversial call sparked immediate debate among baseball experts and fans. ESPN's Jeff Passan described it as "the worst most consequential call of the WBC so far." The absence of the Automated Ball-Strike challenge system in the tournament meant Dominican Republic had no recourse to review the decision.

While both teams benefited from questionable calls throughout the game, the timing and significance of the final strike made it particularly painful for the Dominican Republic. Their roster featured six players who finished among the top 10 in MVP voting last year and had dominated their path to the semifinals.

Team USA now awaits Monday's semifinal between Italy and Venezuela to determine their opponent for Tuesday's championship game. The Americans captured the inaugural WBC title in 2017 but fell to Japan in the 2023 final despite featuring stars like Bryce Harper and Aaron Judge.

The victory represents redemption for a loaded American roster that entered the tournament with championship expectations and the pressure of competing on home soil.
