United States rally to finish Solheim Cup opening day level at 4-4

Europe and the United States ended Friday tied 4-4 at the Solheim Cup in the Netherlands after the Americans recovered from deficits in the afternoon fourballs. The Guardian reported that Europe had led in three matches after the morning foursomes finished 2-2.

Yealimi Noh and Angel Yin earned a half-point against Charley Hull and Lottie Woad despite trailing by three holes after the 11th. Noh birdied four holes in a six-hole stretch, including the 17th after a bunker shot to five feet. Carlota Ciganda and Julia López Ramírez also halved their match against Nelly Korda and Lauren Coughlin.

Megan Khang and Alison Lee beat Céline Boutier and Nanna Koerstz Madsen 5&3, while European debutants Mimi Rhodes and Nastasia Nadaud defeated Allisen Corpuz and Auston Kim. According to the Guardian, Europe captain Anna Nordqvist rested all four players who had delivered the team's morning points.

Earlier, Korda and Corpuz had beaten Hull and Woad 4&3 at Bernardus Golf. Golf Channel reported that they became the first Solheim Cup partnership to reach a 5-0 record. After losing the opening hole, the Americans won three successive holes from the sixth through the eighth. They completed a bogey-free performance, finishing four under par and securing the day's first point.

The United States also won the morning's second match, with Alison Lee and Coughlin defeating Boutier and Koerstz Madsen 3&2. Golf Channel reported that Coughlin's career record improved to four wins, no defeats and one halved match. That equalled Michelle Wie's American record for points earned across a player's first five Solheim Cup matches, adding another American milestone to the opening session.

Europe balanced those results through Esther Henseleit and Leona Maguire, who beat Andrea Lee and Lindy Duncan by two holes, and Maja Stark and Linn Grant, who overcame Rose Zhang and Jennifer Kupcho 3&2. Maguire improved to 9-3-1. Golf Channel reported that her winning percentage became the highest among European players with at least five matches, overtaking Janice Moodie's mark.
