United offer JJ Gabriel scholarship
Manchester United have offered JJ Gabriel a scholarship contract, according to reporting published Thursday by the Guardian.
Watch the highlights:
The development follows a dispute over the teenage forward's progression towards senior football. Sky Sports News reported on October 6 that Gabriel remained registered with United after his family formally requested his departure. The broadcaster said efforts to repair the relationship had not produced progress at that point. It also reported that it had approached his family for comment.
Gabriel's appearance in United's recently released first-team photograph had drawn attention, but Sky reported that the picture was taken on September 8, before the request to leave. The broadcaster said he had trained with the senior squad during pre-season and appeared against Atletico Madrid in a friendly. His involvement in that match amounted to a brief substitute appearance rather than an extended opportunity.
Sky also reported that first-team coaches, medical staff and performance specialists had been involved in an individual development programme for Gabriel. The disagreement concerned how much senior football he would play at the beginning of the season. As of its October 6 report, the broadcaster said there had been no contact between clubs about his availability.
United's own reporting documents the academy performances behind Gabriel's rise. He won the club's Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award for 2025/26 at 15, becoming its youngest recipient. The previous record belonged to Angel Gomes, who was 16 years and eight months old when he won in 2017. Gabriel also became the inaugural Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season.
His league campaign included 23 goals, with a hat-trick in a 7-0 victory at Liverpool and two more goals in the return fixture at Carrington. United also recorded his FA Youth Cup goals against Peterborough United, Crystal Palace and Oxford United. He subsequently represented Darren Fletcher's team in the final against Manchester City, adding a major youth final to a season recognised by both club and league awards.
