Michael Malone Era Begins at UNC as Tar Heels Face Significant Roster Overhaul Through Transfer Portal
With seven players either in or expected to enter the transfer portal, North Carolina's new head coach Michael Malone faces an immediate roster rebuild — while also pulling in major donor support and chasing high-profile prospects.

CHAPEL HILL — When North Carolina hired Michael Malone last week, the program ushered in an era unlike anything seen in Chapel Hill since 1952. Malone is the first UNC head basketball coach in more than seven decades without direct ties to the university, breaking from a tradition stretching back to Frank McGuire's tenure. The decision to go outside the family tree signaled a new direction — and the transfer portal activity since has underscored that reality.

Seven players are either in the portal or expected to enter it, according to reports. Guard Kyan Evans is the only player officially in the portal as of this week. Zayden High, James Brown, Jonathan Powell, Derek Dixon, Jaydon Young, and Isaiah Denis are all expected to follow. Powell, a guard, has already found a new home, committing to Pitt. Jaydon Young, meanwhile, reversed course and withdrew his name from the portal to remain at UNC — a small but meaningful win for Malone and his staff.

The new coaching staff has moved quickly to stabilize what remains of the roster and restock it through the portal. According to reports, Malone and his staff have already reached out to several high-profile transfer targets including Alabama's Aiden Sherrell, Utah's Terrence Brown, Santa Clara's Christian Hammond, Troy's Thomas Dowd, and Arkansas' Karter Knox. Former NBA head coach Billy Donovan was reportedly considered, but Malone won out in part due to his recruiting pedigree and ability to move quickly.

One of the more intriguing subplots involves Dylan Mingo, a UNC commit who is taking his second official visit to Chapel Hill. A lesser-known NCAA rule permits a second visit for prospects meeting with newly hired head coaches. Dylan Mingo's brother, Kayden Mingo, entered the portal from Penn State, raising the possibility the siblings could reunite in Chapel Hill if Malone pulls off that move.

Financially, the early returns have been strong. Within days of Malone's announcement, Inside Carolina reported a significant influx of donor support — including from contributors who rarely or never gave to the men's basketball program. That financial backing is expected to be critical in competing for top portal talent as the offseason takes shape.
