Tuscarawas County Special Olympics Rockets Capture Multiple Golds at Ohio Winter Games
The Rockets dominated the Ohio Special Olympics Winter Games with victories in basketball, cheerleading, and swimming, including a fifth consecutive cheer championship.

The Tuscarawas County Special Olympics Rockets delivered a masterful performance at the Ohio Special Olympics Winter Games held at The Ohio State University in Columbus, capturing multiple gold medals and continuing championship traditions that exemplify the spirit of inclusive athletic competition.

More than 40 athletes and unified partners represented Tuscarawas County in the state's premier Special Olympics event, competing against thousands of participants across team basketball, skills basketball, swimming, and competitive cheerleading. The Rockets' comprehensive success across all four sports demonstrated the program's commitment to excellence and inclusive athletic development.

The basketball competition showcased the Rockets' depth and versatility, with the program fielding four teams across different divisions for the first time in their history. The Unified Team emerged as the standout performer, capturing gold medal honors while completing an exceptional 10-1 season record.

Key to the Unified Team's success were standout performances from J'Marea Sterns, Keilan Patterson, Dorian Wilson, and Matthew Medley, guided by coaches Denise McGinnis and Sarah McVey. The team's journey to state gold began with a notable regional championship victory over Portage County, demonstrating their readiness for elite-level competition.

The School Age team also distinguished themselves with bronze medal recognition, finishing their season with a respectable 4-5 record. Team members Nathan Davies, Julius Emery, Leah Hughes, Nevaeh Jeffries, Addi Miller, Ember Miller, Frankie Poorman, Matthew Toole, Shaun Washington, and Lyla Witts showcased remarkable improvement under coaches Angie Hall, Heidi Miller, and Lexi Miller.

Individual excellence shined in skills basketball competition, where Rockets athletes Robert Miller and Larry Smitley claimed gold medals while Chelsea Lefler earned silver recognition. These achievements highlight the program's success in developing both team chemistry and individual athletic prowess.

The Rockets Competitive Cheer Squad continued their remarkable dynasty by capturing their fifth consecutive state championship gold medal in the Mount & Tumble Division. This unprecedented streak of success reflects both exceptional talent and dedicated coaching across multiple generations of athletes.

Performing to Lady Gaga music while incorporating original cheers and chants, squad members Dolly Alsept, Kaylee Arthurs, Heather Baker, Emily Erwin, Cindy Franklin, Lexi Lacheta, Addi Miller, Alexis Partridge, Rebekah Rothel, Stacey Shroyer, and Cassie Tedrick delivered a championship-caliber routine.

The coaching staff of Kat Arthurs, Julie Erwin, Rhonda Lacheta, and Heidi Miller deserves special recognition for maintaining excellence while developing new talent capable of extending this remarkable championship tradition.

Swimming competition provided additional medal opportunities for Rockets athletes, with Jackson Gambs earning two silver medals in both 25-meter and 50-meter freestyle races. His performances demonstrated the technical skill and competitive drive that characterize successful Special Olympics participation.

Katie Ross contributed silver medal recognition in 25-meter freestyle while adding bronze in 25-meter backstroke, showcasing versatility across different swimming disciplines. Emma Ward, Kody Miller, and Cassie Wright achieved top-five finishes in their respective events, reflecting the program's emphasis on individual improvement alongside competitive success.

The unified relay team of Ryder Margo, Stephen Meredith, Kody Miller, and Cassie Wright performed admirably in a highly competitive field, demonstrating the collaborative spirit that defines Special Olympics competition. Coach Dee Dee Weber, assisted by Lois Wright, guided the swimmers through months of preparation leading to state-level success.

A particularly meaningful moment occurred when Rachael Russell, the current Special Olympics Ohio and Ohio American Legion Female Athlete of the Year, carried the Lantern during Opening Ceremonies. This recognition highlighted the broader impact of Special Olympics participation on individual achievement and community leadership.

The gesture from Nate Samples, who donated shirts to unite the Tuscarawas County delegation, exemplified the community support that makes Special Olympics programs successful. Samples' involvement with the Law Enforcement Torch Run in Ohio demonstrates how law enforcement partnerships enhance Special Olympics experiences.

As the Rockets transition toward spring sports including bocce, bowling, powerlifting, track, and volleyball, their Winter Games success provides momentum and confidence for upcoming competitions. The program's year-round commitment to training and development creates opportunities for sustained athletic growth.

Special Olympics participation remains open to anyone ages 8 and older with intellectual disabilities, offering comprehensive sports training at no cost while building confidence, friendships, and competitive skills that extend far beyond athletic venues.

The Tuscarawas County Rockets' Ohio Winter Games achievements represent more than medal counts or championship streaks - they celebrate human potential, inclusive competition, and the transformative power of sport in building stronger communities.
