Turkey to return to F1 calendar from 2027
Formula 1 has confirmed that Turkey will return to the calendar starting from the 2027 season, bringing back one of the most challenging and picturesque circuits on the motorsport calendar. The announcement marks the end of a prolonged absence for the Istanbul Park circuit, which last hosted an F1 race during the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
Watch the highlights:
The Turkish Grand Prix gained significant attention during its recent appearances, particularly in 2020 when it hosted a double-header amid the pandemic. The circuit, designed by Hermann Tilke, features a unique combination of high-speed corners and elevation changes that have challenged even the most experienced drivers in the sport.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed enthusiasm about the return: "Turkey represents an important market for Formula 1, and Istanbul Park offers a spectacular venue for our sport. The circuit has consistently delivered exciting races, and we look forward to bringing our global audience back to this incredible facility."
The announcement comes as F1 continues its expansion strategy across new territories while maintaining traditional European circuits. Turkey's return provides additional diversity to the calendar and offers fans in the region direct access to world-class motorsport action.
Istanbul Park circuit operator Intercity has been working closely with F1 officials to ensure facilities meet the highest standards required for a Formula 1 event. Negotiations reportedly centered on infrastructure improvements and promotional commitments that would ensure the event's long-term sustainability.
Drivers have welcomed the news, with several noting their appreciation for the technical challenges presented by the 5.338-kilometer circuit. The return will also provide Turkish fans with the opportunity to see their national hero, former F1 driver and current Mercedes advisor, potentially involved in proceedings.
