Tuchel gives Trafford and Pickford two England matches each in goalkeeper rotation

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that James Trafford and Jordan Pickford will each receive two consecutive England matches during the international break, according to BBC Sport. The England manager explained the arrangement after Trafford made his competitive international debut in Saturday's 3-2 Nations League defeat by Spain at Wembley, England's opening game in the competition.

Tuchel said the decision was intended to assess Trafford's progress, rather than a response to anything Pickford had done wrong. The manager pointed to Trafford's start to the Premier League season and his regular appearances as Leeds' first-choice goalkeeper as reasons for the opportunity. His comments set out a shared allocation of matches, not a declaration that Pickford had permanently lost his place.

Trafford, 23, made his third England appearance against the world champions. He saved from Ferran Torres in the first half but conceded three goals as England were beaten. BBC Sport reported that he has kept two clean sheets for Leeds this season, helping the club reach fifth in the Premier League table following his summer move.

The opportunity follows a club career that has already included spells at Manchester City and Burnley. Trafford developed in City's academy before joining Burnley in 2023, and later helped the Clarets win promotion in 2024-25. He returned to City the following summer, but the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma left him as second choice. He nevertheless started both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup finals before moving to Leeds.

Trafford also has previous experience of facing Spain in an England shirt. He won the Under-21 European Championship in 2023, saving a stoppage-time penalty in the final against Spain as part of Lee Carsley's team. His latest appearance came at senior competitive level, with Tuchel using the Nations League to examine an alternative to his established goalkeeper.

Pickford remains the substantially more experienced international. The 32-year-old Everton goalkeeper has made 91 England appearances and kept 46 clean sheets, BBC Sport reported. He made his debut in 2017 and has been a regular starter at major tournaments. Tuchel's stated plan gives both keepers a consecutive pair of games during the break while providing Trafford with further senior international experience.
