Tuchel rejects club deals over England minutes but leaves rotation open

Thomas Tuchel has said he will not negotiate England players' minutes with Premier League managers during the extended Nations League window, while acknowledging that repeating his strongest selection may not be possible. According to Sky Sports, the England manager wants continuity through a schedule of four matches in 11 days, rather than agreements with clubs over individual appearances.

Tuchel said he had not called national-team coaches to seek such arrangements when he worked in club football and would not begin taking those calls now. He argued that agreeing in advance to split matches or rest players would send the wrong message to a squad whose immediate responsibility is to win.

That position was not a guarantee of an unchanged side. The Standard reported that Tuchel's preference was to retain at least six or seven starters, giving them both responsibility and evidence of his confidence. He nevertheless said he was unsure whether that could be sustained. Harry Kane, he added, wanted to start all four games.

Jude Bellingham's situation illustrates the distinction between Tuchel's preferred approach and the demands of the schedule. AFP reported that the manager would like the midfielder to feature in all four matches but was concerned that he had not played that sequence within such a compressed period this season. Tuchel said physiotherapists would be consulted and that Bellingham would not be put at risk.

The manager also backed Bellingham's combative playing style after England's 3–2 defeat by Spain at Wembley on Saturday. AFP reported that the midfielder exchanged words with Marc Cucurella and provided the assist for Anthony Gordon's goal. Tuchel said confrontation could help bring out Bellingham's best football and that friendships with opponents did not change his determination to win during an international match.

England's remaining fixtures place those selection decisions in quick succession. The schedule published by Sky Sports lists an away match against Czechia on September 29, a visit to Croatia on October 3 and the return against Czechia on October 6.
