Trump whitewashes Selby 5-0 to set up Shenzhen semi-final against Wu
Judd Trump defeated Mark Selby 5-0 at the Shenzhen Open on Friday to reach the semi-finals, where he will face world champion Wu Yize. BBC Sport reported that Wu secured his place by beating Shaun Murphy 5-4, again prevailing in a deciding frame against his opponent from this year's Crucible final.
Watch the highlights:
Trump made breaks of 63, 52, 77, 51 and 79, according to World Snooker Tour. The tour said this was his first whitewash of Selby in a match played over more than five frames. It was also their first meeting since last year's Champion of Champions and UK Championship finals, both of which Selby won.
The victory took Trump into his 77th ranking semi-final. World Snooker Tour reported that the world number two is seeking his 32nd ranking title and his first since February's German Masters. He has already won the invitational Shanghai Masters this season, but needs two further victories in Shenzhen to end his wait for another ranking-event trophy.
Wu's route to the last four was considerably tighter. Murphy compiled breaks of 104 and 98, yet the players reached the interval level after the Englishman missed opportunities in other frames, BBC Sport reported. Murphy then moved 3-2 ahead with a 68 before Wu responded with breaks of 94 and 121 to take the lead.
Murphy forced the ninth frame after Wu missed a brown in the eighth. The world champion then punished a mistake in the decider with a 117 break, completing his second century in the final three frames. The result repeated the deciding-frame outcome of their World Championship final earlier this year, with Wu again advancing at Murphy's expense.
The other semi-final will pit Jimmy Robertson against Yuan Sijun. Robertson beat Chris Wakelin 5-3, while Yuan recovered to defeat Michael Holt 5-2 after winning four consecutive frames, including two centuries. PA's report, carried by RTÉ, said Robertson remains in contention for his first ranking title since winning the European Masters in 2018.
