President Trump Attends UFC Miami Event as Iran Negotiations Collapse
President Donald Trump spent Saturday evening at the Kaseya Center in Miami watching UFC fighters compete while diplomatically, on the other side of the world, his administration faced a significant setback as nuclear negotiations with Iran collapsed.
Trump arrived at the arena shortly after 9pm, accompanied by several family members including daughters Ivanka and Tiffany, and son Donald Jr. UFC president Dana White, a longstanding Trump ally since his first term, escorted the president to his seats. Secretary of State Marco Rubio joined them, having traveled from Pakistan where negotiations had reportedly reached an impasse.
The timing proved striking. As Trump greeted fans to raucous applause, with Kid Rock playing in the background, Vice President JD Vance was informing reporters in Islamabad that talks with Iranian officials had broken down. The central sticking point remained Tehran's refusal to commit to abandoning its nuclear programme.
We need to see an affirmative commitment that Iran will not seek a nuclear weapon, and will not pursue the capabilities that would enable them to achieve one quickly, Vance told media. That remains the core objective of the president.
Inside the arena, Trump appeared focused entirely on the action inside the cage. At one point, Rubio leant across to show the president something on his phone. After Paulo Costa defeated Azamat Murzakanov in the co-main event, the Brazilian winner walked over to shake the president's hand. The crowd witnessed a particularly brutal encounter between Josh Hokit and Curtis Blaydes that left both fighters bloodied.
White later confirmed that a bout involving Hokit had been added to a planned White House card scheduled for June 14, the president's 80th birthday and the United States 250th anniversary celebration. President Trump built half of that fight, Joe Rogan the other half, White explained in a social media video.
Also present were rapper Vanilla Ice, former FBI deputy director Dan Bongino, and US ambassador to India Sergio Gor. Meanwhile, Jared Kushner, Ivanka's husband, had accompanied Vance in Pakistan rather than attending the Miami event.
Trump has cultivated strong ties with UFC and its predominantly young male audience throughout his political career, frequently appearing at events and leveraging the sport's popularity among his base. Saturday marked another visible demonstration of that relationship, even as his administration navigated growing international tensions.
