Trump and Rubio Take in UFC Miami as Iran Negotiations Collapse Half a World Away
The President of the United States prefers his diplomacy with a side of violence. Or at least, that is what his weekend itinerary suggested.
Donald Trump arrived at the Kaseya Center in Miami shortly after 9pm on Saturday, settling into his seats alongside three of his children, Ivanka, Tiffany, and Donald Jr, along with UFC chief Dana White, a man whose loyalty to the president dates back to the first term. Secretary of State Marco Rubio took a neighbouring seat, as did US ambassador to India Sergio Gor, the rapper Vanilla Ice, and former FBI deputy director Dan Bongino. Joe Rogan was calling the fights for UFC.
On the other side of the world, in Pakistan, Vice President JD Vance was telling reporters that indirect peace talks between the United States and Iran had broken down. Iran would not commit to abandoning its nuclear ambitions, Vance said. The core demand of the American side had been rebuffed.
Trump, reportedly, was watching fights.
There was no visible concern as the President took his seat to a rousing greeting from the Miami crowd, a Kid Rock song still blasting through the arena speakers. He shook hands with fans nearby, posed for photographs, and appeared thoroughly at ease as the first bouts of the evening unfolded. Occasionally he leant across to exchange words with Rubio. At one point the Secretary of State showed the President something on his phone, likely developments from the Pakistan talks, or something else entirely.
The main card delivered exactly the kind of spectacle the White House duo had come to see. In the co-main event, Paulo Costa defeated Azamat Murzakanov by decision, and made a point of walking over to shake the President's hand afterward. The moment drew the loudest cheer of the night from the Trump section.
But it was the heavyweight bout between Curtis Blaydes and Josh Hokit that truly captured the room. It was, by most accounts, a brutal affair. Blood was spilled. The President watched with visible intensity.
After the event, Dana White revealed that Hokit had been added to the White House card on June 14 at Trump's personal request. The date is the President's 80th birthday and will mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. The East Room of the White House has not played host to a fight night in living memory.
President Trump built half of that fight, White said in a social media video. Rogan built the other half. Both guys have agreed.
Trump has long been a known UFC supporter, a relationship that political observers believe has been instrumental in building his popularity among young male voters. Rogan's podcast has served as an informal outreach channel for the administration. The White House card is the logical extension of a friendship that has been years in the making.
The talks with Iran, for their part, appear to be finished for now. Vance told reporters he had spoken to Trump several times during the negotiations. Iran's refusal to accept constraints on its nuclear programme proved the fatal stumbling block. The war in the Middle East, and America's role in it, remains unresolved.
But that was a problem for Sunday. Saturday belonged to the cage, and on Saturday night in Miami, the President of the United States had front row seats.
