Trafford Eyes Exit From Manchester City as Backup Role Proves Untenable
England goalkeeper James Trafford appears destined for a summer departure from Manchester City, with Newcastle United leading the race for his signature.

Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford is poised to seek a transfer away from the Etihad Stadium this summer, as his quest for regular first-team football remains unfulfilled behind Italian number one Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The 23-year-old England international has found opportunities limited since Donnarumma's deadline day arrival from Paris Saint-Germain last August, despite City paying £27 million to bring Trafford back from Burnley just one month prior.

Traffords frustration has become increasingly apparent throughout the campaign. Initially led to believe he would compete directly for the starting position, the Carlisle-born keeper has been relegated largely to cup competitions, though he did produce a standout performance in City's Carabao Cup final victory over Arsenal at Wembley last month.

According to reports from the Manchester Evening News, City have accepted that accommodating Trafford's desire for regular minutes is impossible while Donnarumma remains the undisputed first choice. The club is unlikely to block his departure and will seek a fee that reflects his status as arguably the Premier League's finest backup goalkeeper.

Manager Pep Guardiola has repeatedly praised Trafford as an "unbelievable keeper" with an "incredible future" and has publicly urged him to remain at the club. However, these entreaties appear insufficient to convince the young shot-stopper to accept another season in a supporting role.

Traffords abilities were on full display during City's 4-0 FA Cup quarter-final triumph over Liverpool last weekend, where he saved a penalty from Mohamed Salah. Such performances only serve to highlight the quality City would be losing while simultaneously boosting his market value.

Newcastle United have emerged as frontrunners for Trafford's signature, with manager Eddie Howe having long admired the goalkeeper. The Magpies nearly secured his services before he opted to return to City last summer.

Aston Villa and Tottenham have also registered their interest. Spurs view Trafford as a potential replacement for Guglielmo Vicario should the Italian depart North London this summer. Early reports suggested Trafford personally favored a move to Villa Park, though the situation remains fluid with multiple clubs now actively pursuing him.

For Trafford, a departure represents the best opportunity of his career to establish himself as a Premier League starter and strengthen his position in Thomas Tuchel's England squad ahead of future major tournaments. His academy connection to City adds an emotional element to the decision, but professional ambition appears to be driving his thinking.

The potential exit would leave director of football Hugo Viana with a significant void to fill behind Donnarumma, as City requires reliable backup during what promises to be one of the most consequential summer transfer windows in recent memory at the Etihad Stadium.

With several clubs circling and Trafford's intentions clear, a second departure from his boyhood club appears inevitable as the summer window approaches.
