Trafford reflects on Manchester City frustration after finding regular role at Leeds
James Trafford has described the frustration of spending much of last season outside Manchester City’s Premier League starting side, explaining the difficulties that preceded his summer move to Leeds United. In an interview reported by BBC Sport, the goalkeeper also reflected positively on what he learned during that period.
Watch the highlights:
City brought Trafford back from Burnley in July 2025, but Gianluigi Donnarumma’s subsequent arrival limited his opportunities. BBC Sport reported that Trafford started the first three league games and only one more thereafter. He nevertheless started both domestic cup finals as City won the League Cup and FA Cup.
The move to Leeds has brought regular football: Trafford started their first nine league matches and kept three clean sheets. He also remains intent on becoming England’s first-choice goalkeeper, having attended the 2026 World Cup without making an appearance.
His recent club experience has included a setback at Bournemouth. Sky Sports reported that a misplaced pass from Trafford allowed Evanilson to give the hosts the lead in their 2-0 victory on October 31. Leeds struggled to respond, producing one shot on target from 10 attempts during their visit to the south coast. The result gave Bournemouth a sixth consecutive win without conceding across all competitions, with Leeds unable to end that run despite keeping the margin to one goal until late.
Daniel Farke defended his goalkeeper afterwards, according to Sky Sports, even while acknowledging the importance of the error. The Leeds manager said Trafford had already helped earn points and expressed confidence that his future contributions would outweigh the cost of mistakes. Farke also reiterated that he wanted a goalkeeper willing to build attacks from the back. His response combined criticism of that particular decision with support for the player’s ability to perform the role.
Trafford’s ambitions extend beyond his own selection. In the BBC interview, he praised Leeds and spoke of a desire to help the club return to European competition, while stressing continued improvement.
