Tottenham Sign Mykhailo Mudryk on Loan From Chelsea

Tottenham have signed Mykhailo Mudryk from Chelsea on loan until the end of the season, completing the move shortly before the transfer deadline. The Guardian reports that the agreement includes a £75 million option for Tottenham to buy the Ukraine winger, who is eligible to resume his career after resolving an anti-doping case in July.

The transfer gives the 25-year-old a fresh start after a difficult spell at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea signed Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a deal worth an initial €70 million, with a further €30 million in possible add-ons. His most recent competitive appearance for Chelsea came on November 28, 2024.

Mudryk was later suspended after an adverse finding for meldonium and received a four-year ban from the Football Association. According to The Guardian, an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport led to the case being resolved with the FA at the end of July. Mudryk accepted an anti-doping rule violation and agreed to a suspension matching the time he had already served, allowing him to return immediately.

The FA also noted that World Anti-Doping Agency rules concerning meldonium had changed. It said the concentration found in Mudryk's sample would not be reported under the current rules and therefore would not now produce an adverse finding. That distinction forms an important part of the circumstances surrounding his return, while the accepted rule violation remains part of the record.

At Tottenham, Mudryk will again work under Roberto De Zerbi, who coached him at Shakhtar during his breakthrough 2021-22 season. The Guardian reports that De Zerbi recommended the move as Tottenham sought a left-sided attacker. Spurs had previously pursued Cody Gakpo and Iliman Ndiaye before turning to Mudryk, with Mathys Tel having started the new campaign on the left.

Mudryk joins a reshaped Tottenham forward line that also features summer arrivals Sávio and Omar Marmoush, both signed from Manchester City. His pace and creativity give De Zerbi another option across the attack, but the immediate task is rebuilding match fitness after a long absence from competitive football. The loan gives Tottenham a season to assess that progress before deciding whether to activate the purchase option.
